Giacomo Leopardi

Home of Giacomo Leopardi

Any visitor to Le Marche with an interest in European literature must visit the Leopardi museum (the Casa Leopardi) in Recanati. The town itself is interesting, with a fine castle and many palaces and churches, and also a fine theatre, but it’s main claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of Leopardi in 1798.

Giacomo Taldegardo Francesco di Sales Saverio Pietro Leopardi is commonly viewed as one of the most important thinkers of his period. He was an essayist, a philosopher, a philologist, and most importantly, a poet. He was familiar with the ideas of the enlightenment and he provided the link between this and the Romantic era with his unique brand of lyrical poetry.

He was born into a noble family in Recanati, son of Count Monaldo Leopardi, who was unfortunately addicted to gambling.

His mother, the Marquise Adelaide Antici Mattei, made it her business to bring up the children with a rigorous discipline of religion and parsimony. He wrote a great deal about his childhood in the book of poems called ‘Le Ricordanze’ (Memories).

He was a sickly child and immersed himself in reading rather than other simple youthful pleasures. He was profoundly influenced by the classicist Pietro Giordani who came to stay with the family when he was 19, and they remained lifelong friends. He was desperate to escape the restrictions of living with his family in Recanati, but a brief stay in Rome only disappointed him. He was upset by the decadence and hypocrisy of Roman society and the church.

He wrote an enormous number of books, but one most worthy of mention was his ‘opus magnum’, the Zibaldone. This is a compendium of personal impressions, aphorisms, profound philosophical observations, philological analyses, literary criticism and various types of notes which was published posthumously in seven volumes in 1898 with the original title of Pensieri di varia filosofia e bella letteratura (‘Various thoughts on philosophy and literature’).

He fell desperately in love with his cousin, Geltrude Cassi, but this was unrequited and he remained single until his untimely death in 1837.

Portrait of Giacomo Leopardi

He was extremely successful as a writer and thinker in his own time, and travelled quite widely, but was forced always to return to Recanati because of ill health. He died during the cholera epidemic in Naples. He was buried in the church of San Vitale, but many years later his body was moved to its current resting place, next to Virgil’s tomb in the Parco Virgiliano in Naples.

The museum is situated in the Palazzo Leopardi, which does not strike one as being a very grandiose building. It’s simple, classical lines are due to renovations which took place in the 18th century. The entire first floor is taken up with the Leopardi family’s famous library. This is the only part of the building open to the public, as the rest of the Palazzo is still occupied by the ancestors of Leopardi himself.

For lovers of his work it is an extremely emotive experience to spend time in the places that he loved and wrote about with such passion and beauty.

Country Life Museum
The Country Life Museum, Grottazzolina

The Country Life Museum, Grottazzolina, province of Fermo (Click here for link)

In the outskirts of Grottazzolina, a small town 12 km west of Fermo, is an interesting, peculiar private museum, having a curious history. On entering it, a hall evokes, through original artefacts, the family life in Le Marche countryside in the last 120 years, paced by the rhythms of nature. Each month brought different, works, needs, religious events, and has in this museum a dedicated stand, where you can also notice the talent and creativity farmers performed in making and using their own tools. Other halls welcome you into the workshop of a blacksmith, a primary school classroom, a pre-school classroom, a grocery shop, a tavern, a dressmaker’s, the studio of a dentist, a cobbler’s shop and much more! In the last 35 years, Mr. Lauro Lupi has collected a considerable amount of objects that for a long time were part of everyone’s life, and that progress had apparently swept away. Still the kind of life and value they evoke, in a richness of details, are a great teaching about a society based upon a simpler and reliable technology, but also genuine human relationships.

Mobile Tradesme Museum

The Museum of Mobile Tradesmen in Montelparo, province of Fermo (Click here for map)

In the 60s about 2 million cars were on the roads, less than the number which is now sold every year. But between 1920 and 1960 the velocipede was the main vehicle in Italy and even market stalls were often transported on bikes ridden by our grandfathers and great grandfathers. This is the daily reality shown by the Museum of the Mobile Professions in Montelparo (Museo di Antichi mestieri ambulanti ) There are 50 fully functioning bicycles on show, mostly originating from the flat, wine region of Emilia Romagna. These were bicycle home delivery men who spent several months away from home. The bikes have quite high carrying racks, making it difficult to balance (and in fact, many of them have three wheels.) The heavy frames have thick steel cross bars, which was an economical solution at a time in which foundries were coal fuelled, and steel cost next to nothing.  I was told by the guide at the museum that the workers were almost all men, as the bicycles were extremely heavy when boxes were stacked on them.

The little bicycle belonging to the shoeshine boy gave me a profound feeling of tenderness thinking of the children that used it. Perhaps it is for this reason that I have dedicated the entire collection to my daughter Laura’, writes Lauro Lupi, the collection owner, on his website. It was initially set up from his private collection of about 30 bicycles in a travelling exhibition, but now has a fixed location in the Augustine and Benedictine Monastery in Montelparo and has more than 50 bicycles designed and made to carry out the most varied range of commercial activities. The exhibition gives a glimpse of Italian life between the 1920s and the 1960s when ingenuity, practicality, strength and hard human labour were essential.

The 3,000 square-metre museum contains over 900,000 shells from all over the world– and a further 9 million stored for research purposes. The display is organized into a wide variety of categories, all of them of interest. There is, of course, the shell section, with seashells in a huge variety of shapes, colours and sizes from all over the world. There is even one amazing shell weighing 200kg.

There is also a section featuring fossils, including ammonites, aquatic dinosaurs (one measuring 8 metres!) and both vertebrates and invertebrates. There is a lovely display of worked mother-of-pearl, including cameos and buttons, and a selection of African and Asian masks decorated with shells. A curious section dedicated to sharks, (also featuring deep sea crabs, starfish, coral and sea anemones) is also very popular, particularly with children. As well as the exhibition itself, there is also a conference room seating 200, an auditorium and audio-visual hall, an extensive library, a laboratory for shell identification and photography, and a malacological ceramic tile exhibition. The souvenir shop (with a selection of 10,000 shells to choose from) also sells mother-of- pearl articles, as well as cameos, jewellery made of shells, and books. The museum is close to a good selection of restaurants, hotels and camp sites.

In the Montani Palazzo in Piazza Risorgimento the visitor can find a fascinating museum of the history of timekeeping, the ‘Museo dell’Orologio di Montefiore dell’Aso’.The Clock Museum has over 100 clocks on display including a rare Roman hemispherical sundial which was locally made in the second century and found on the of a Roman villa nearby. The collection includes large 18th century tower clocks, grandfather pendulum clock and wall clocks. There is a wide variety of vintage timepieces on display, ranging from early hourglasses to travel alarm clocks, table and mantel clocks and carriage clocks. Many different materials are used in the manufacture of these clocks; marble, wood, gilt metal, copper,  brass, cast iron, nickel, tin, celluloid and pewter. The Museum displays over 80 portable clocks from Europe and America dating from the early 18th to 20th century including Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts and Art Deco.

The first piece on display at the opening of the museum in 2014 was the large, elaborate clock designed by Ennio Melloncelli in the second half of the 19th century. It was given to the town of Montefiore, to take pride of place in the clocktower. The museum houses many different time-keeping instruments, showing the progression of this science through time. There are several solar clocks, or sundials, and one of the centre pieces is a Roman sundial which was locally made in the second century and found on the site of a Roman villa nearby. The sundial which had always been in Piazza della Repubblica but was removed after the second world war at a time when all fascist emblems were also being removed. This was restored and added to the collection in 2015.There is also an exhibition of photographs of three sundials, or solar clocks, from different locations in the town. There is a beautiful clock case with an escapement mechanism from the end of the 19th century, an early electric clock from Milan, and a 19th century hourglass.

Barbie Museum

One of the last things you’d probably expect to find in a rural guest house in Le Marche would be a comprehensive exhibition of Barbie dolls – but here it is!  Rosella Lobbi, the owner of the guest house and restaurant, has always had a passion for Barbie dolls, which were hard to get hold of in Italy when she was a child, so she dedicated a lot of her time, and money, to gathering a collection of about 1000 Barbie and Ken dolls. Only about 450 dolls are on display, due to limitation of space. For Barbie-loving children (or adults) this is a cornucopia of delight. The collection also contains Barbie’s predecessor, which was made in Germany in the late 40s and was called Bild Lilli. She was the protagonist in a cartoon strip for adults. All the dolls are wearing their original clothes, which, in the early days, were hand sewn onto the dolls. She also has examples from the first American Mattel series from the 1950s. There are also dolls wearing unique haute couture designs by famous fashion designers. She has also taken some of the most important items from her

collection to various doll exhibitions around the world, receiving huge acclaim in Moscow, for example, in 2014.Rosella is still passionate about her collection and will be delighted to show you round this extraordinary private collection.

Montefiore boasts six interesting museums and art galleries, five of which are to be found in one magnificent building. The Monastery of San Francesco (Saint Francis), which was consecrated in 1264,
has been converted into a museum complex called the Polo Museale. The exhibitions can be seen in a series of galleries leading from the central cloisters of the monastery.

Giancarlo Basili Gallery
The first gallery the visitor comes across is dedicated to Giancarlo Basili, the prestigious contemporary scenographer. There are photos, sketches and videos centred around the original sets of several of his best-known films.

Peasant Culture Gallery

The next part of the museum is concerned with traditional Peasant Culture from the region (Il Museo della Civiltà Contadina). It features four hundred tools and other objects that were collected from local families. There is also a soundscape, consisting of traditional songs, nursery rhymes, farmyard sounds and the sound of the weaving loom.

Domenico Cantatore Gallery

This is followed by the Domenico Cantatore section, which contains numerous engravings, sketches and aquatint prints by the artist from Puglia, who spent many summers in the Montefiore countryside. The collection features his famous odalisques, and geometric portraits of men from the south of Italy, and also many sunny landscapes suggestive of the Montefiore environs. He found the natural environment of Montefiore most conducive to his own brand of creativity, which is why he donated his collection to the museum here.

Carlo Crivelli Gallery

The centrepiece of the museum is the Polyptych by Carlo Crivelli, which was painted by the Venetian painter in 1472 for the Church of Saint Francis. There are many other stunning works by Crivelli, demonstrating his ability to use gold and precious stones in his work.  Particularly impressive are the headpiece and staff of St Louis of Toulouse and St Catherine of Alexandria’s crown.

Adolfo de Carolis Gallery

The final wing of the exhibition houses Adolfo de Carolis rooms, which displays around five hundred works by this local artist. They are primarily woodcuts and drawings, but there are also sixty-nine preparatory oil sketches for the large fresco decorating the Salone dei Quattromila (the hall of the four thousand) in the Palazzo del Podesta in Bologna, which he painted between 1908 and 1928.

These works are exhibited in a single room, which was probably the refectory of the former monastery of San Francesco, which still retains the original 13th century walls. These are displayed in the original arrangement designed by Carolis for the hall in Bologna but displayed on a metal framework which preserves the historic features of the room. These sketches give the only surviving evidence of how the hall in Bologna would have looked if it had been finished. Completion was prevented by an earthquake and then the outbreak of the first world war. The woodcuts, studies and drawings were donated to the municipality by the De Carolis family between 1974 and 2006, along with some pieces of furniture from the artist’s studio in Bologna.
